About Shivneri Fort
Shivneri fort is the famous most Fort in the Maratha history as it is the birth place of the great warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Maratha Empire. It is located near Junnar of Pune district. This fort was mostly used for guarding the trade route from Desh to the port city of Kalyan.
Shivneri is a hill fort which is nearly triangular in shape. There are mud walls around the Fort. Many gates are present to protect the Fort. One has to cross 7 gates to get on top of the fort. Mana Darwaja is one of them.
History of Shivneri Fort:
Shivneri is the place of Buddhist domain since the 1st Century AD. The rock cut architecture and caves indicate the habitation of humans since 1st century. The fort was passed to the Bahami kings after the Delhi sultanate got weak in the 15th century. It was later passed to Maloji Bhosale, the grandfather of Shivaji by Bahadur Nizam Shah II. Shivaji was born in this fort on 19th February 1630. The fort was under the control of the Mughals but later the Marathas and Shahu demanded it back in 1716. They recaptured the fort in 1762. The Britishers took over the fort in the year 1820.
How to reach Shivneri Fort?
To reach Shivneri one has to head towards Junnar from Pune. Local transport will drop you at Junnar where you have to walk around 2kms to reach the base of the fort. State transport buses are available from Swargate.
If travelling by private transport, you can drive till the foothills of the fort and park your vehicles there.

Things to do at Shivneri Fort:
There is a Shivai (Shiv) temple inside the fort after whom Shivaji Maharaj was named. Kadelot, a point from where criminals were thrown off the fort as a punishment is also present. Water springs named Ganga Jamuna is also present at the fort. The Badami Talav is also a famous spot. There is a hug huge statue of Jijabai and Shivaji Maharaj inside the fort. There are plenty of sigh-seeing places in terms of historical point of view at Shivneri.
