Saras Baug came into construction after the completion of “Devedeveshwar Temple” on the hill top of Parvati during the year 1750 and was commissioned by Balaji Baji Rao (Popularly known as Nanasaheb Peshwa) who decided to built an attractive island in an estimated area of around 25000 sq.ft in the middle of a lake to get a flourishing environment around Parvati Hills. The island was basically been constructed to have it recreated into a garden like place where Peshwas would enjoy the environmental beauty and attend their guest in the midst of this scenic nature encircled with the lake. The lake had a purpose to carry out secret meetings between the Peshwas and their entities, Nanasaheb then named the place as “Saras Baug” for its beautiful presence. Later in the year 1784 Nanasaheb’s grandson Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao decided to built a Ganesh temple which now sits in the middle of Saras Baug. But after the Peshwas lost their governance against the East India Company somewhere in around 1842-43, the British government then took up the responsibility to sever the place and handed the management of the Saras Baug Temple and its premise to some 5 gentlemen.
In later years the place got into renovation by different people such as R. B. Kondo Mahadev Kumthekar who first constructed the mandapa and stare with marble in the year 1936 and later after the place came under the Devedeveshwar temple trust, the PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) official head, Bhujangrao Kulkarni made a further renovation turning the beautiful garden rigid around the lake.
