Rs 90 Lakh Allotted to Clean Pavana Riverbed – Pune’s wait for the monsoon would be soon over as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy pre monsoon showers from Saturday, 18th of June, 2016. The onset of monsoon will going to be declared on 19th June or 20th June, 2016. The weather officials said that, the rainfall could be fairly extensive which will nearly cover 75% of the Maharashtra State. As, the damps drying up in District of Pune as well as in the state, hence, the whole Maharashtra has been waiting for good rainfall. The dams that supplying water to city has been sharply dropping their water level. Hence, the irrigation officials said that they will see the comfortable situation till 15th July and then make necessary announcement till then water is reserved for only drinking purpose.
The Pimpari Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has now taken the responsibility of protecting Pavana River from being turned into dumped ground. So, in order to execute this operation they have drawn a plan under the Clean Pavana Mission. The Pavana River which flows for 25 km in Pimpari –Chinchwad and provides water to over twenty lakh people who residing in these areas. So, because of the rampant of dumping not only the quality of water gets affected, but it may leads to flood in coming monsoon season.
Hence, now the Pimpari Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will soon begin their activity to clean the riverbed of Pavana, from Kiwale to Dapodi with total cost of 90 lakh. Executive Engineer of PCMC, Sanjay Kulkarni said that, they had invited bid for the contract around 6 month ago, as they wanted to begin the work from the month of March –April, but they got approval delay. Overall contract period is of two years. The river has now become home to mosquitoes ,since temporary water diversion structures were manufactured while bridges construction held on it. Also, treated or untreated sewage water is being discharged into the Pavana River along with wreckage of construction. Total 12 locations have been discovered along the 20km stretch of Pavana, from basket bridge, Ravet to Dapodi for the work of cleaning, but if there are heavy rains, then they will stop work for some period, he added.
