About Lohagad Fort

Lohagad meaning iron (Iron fort) is a hill fort with strong intact walls. Lohagad is located in Lonavla which is just a couple of hours away from Pune. This fort is connected to Visapur which is also a fort for trekking.

History of Lohagad Fort:

Lohagad has a long history of various dynasties like the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Nizams, Mughals and the Marathas occupying it for different periods of time. Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1648 but was later forced to surrender it to the Mughals in1665. During the Peshwa times, Nana Phadnavis used it for staying for quite some time and built tanks and step wells.

How to reach Lohagad Fort?

If travelling by roadways, from Pune take the old Mumbai-Pune highway and head towards Lonavla. Before heading towards Lonavla, you’ll find directions for Karla Caves. Malavli is the base village for Lohagad.
If travelling by train, the nearest station is Malavali and from Malavali village a 5km walk will take you to the base of the fort.

Things to do at Lohagad Fort:

This fort is very easy to trek as it has steps to and less amount of trekking is required. The large gates of the fort are worth seeing and the walls of the Fort are still intact. You can also visit the Karla and Bhaja caves which is only 2 kms from the fort. During monsoon the path becomes lush green and adds photographic view. The Fort looks marvellous from the top view. If you have a decent camping gear, you can camp here. Winter is the perfect time for trekking here. During rainy season, the steps of the fort become slippery and hence it is advisable to be careful during the climb. Various small hotels are also present on the base of the fort.
