About Visapur Fort
Visapur is an adjacent fort to Lohagad near Lonavla. It is located in the Pune district. Visapur is built on the same plateau as Lohagad.
History of Visapur Fort
Visapur was built during the time 1713 to 1720 by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of Maratha Empire. The English had to make special preparations to attack this fort because of the strength of Lohagad and its fame as the treasury of the Maratha kingdom. The fort was attacked and captured on 4th March 1818. The British troops set up their cannons on Visapur and bombarded Lohagad, forcing the Marathas to flee due to its high elevation and proximity to Lohagad.
Considering the strategic importance, both the north and south gateways were blown up. In contrast, Lohagad fort is still remaining undamaged.
