To revive legacy and glory of traditional tournament Goa football stepped in to organise the 2016’s Bandodkar Gold trophy football competition, which is supported by Bandodkar family and it has been marketed by Zest Concepts which a sport is marketing firm based in Goa. This year, Bandodkar gold trophy was rebranded as well as repackaged in a new avatar as an Under 21 tournament with aim of becoming India’s premier U-21 tournament eventually.
Pune Football Club wins Bandodkar Gold Trophy
This football tournament kicked off in the third week of May month and witnessed the six teams from Goa, which included the big four of Salgaocar FC, Sporting Clube de Goa, Dempo SC, Churchill Brothers SC and two from Pune that were DSK Shivajians and Pune Football Club. The matches were played at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa in North Goa as well as Navelim Football Ground in South Goa. Since, in the last few days’ football calendar saw six teams who battle it out for the prestigious trophy which gifted to the Goa football Association by their state’s first Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar in year 1970.
In the final of this football campaign Pune based team Pune football club beaten local favourite Dempo Sports to crown the 2016’s Bandodkar Gold Trophy. With this impressive victory, Pune became the sixth away team to lift this coveted trophy of football which played for the first time in more than two decades. Also after the successful completion of this tournament, buoyed President of Goa Football Association, Elvis Gomes will be looking to make this tournament better in each passing year.
