New Places of Halts Reserved for the Palkhi Procession in Pune – Palkhi is a unique feature of Maharashtrian culture. It is a 1000 years old tradition which is followed by the warkaris. Every year lakhs of Warkaris go on an annual pilgrimage from Dehu – Alandi to Pandharpur. Devotees from all over the Maharashtra state as well as country would gather at Dehu and Alandi around 20 days from now to attend annual palkhi procession to Pandharpur. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority has assured that warkaris will not drop their palkhi halts because of the development work. So, from now onwards, these centuries old halts are going to identified and granted as reserved status which get involved in the development plan of city, before next year to indulge the flourishing pilgrims who taking part in the annual wari procession which is held from Dehu and Alandi and finally it reaches to Pandharpur.
New Halts Reserved for the Palkhi
The Guardian minister and PMRDA vice-president Girish Bapat, in his statement said that, since last few years’ lots of development and changes have taken place in and around the several places of halts for the procession of Palkhi. And now these halting grounds will be reserved and also gets included in the city’s development plan. He also told that the PMRDA has already started Survey of DP and these reservation halts will be considered while giving permission to any development work or construction.
In the 250 km journey there are total 18 halts for the palkhi of Sant Tukaram and 15 halts for the palkhi of Sant Dnyaneshwar. And out of these halts a few falls under the PMRDA and Pune district jurisdiction. Sant Tukaram’s palkhi procession commence from Dehu and it takes a halt at Akurdi, Pune, Loni Kalbhor, Yavat, Varvand & Untwadi while, Sant Dnyaneshwar’s palkhi halts at Alandi, Pune, Saswad, Jejuri and then Walhe, all these halts are within the PMRDA boundary. According to informal data, twelve lakh warkaris visit Pandharpur and every year the number increases from five to ten per cent. Also one of the seniors official of PMRDA stated that, some place of halts have owner, while some owned by government departments. So, with their involvement in the DP, these places will be reserved permanently and also development will take place by excluding these regions.
