Maharashtra Government to Plant 2 Crore Trees – On a cloudy Friday (July 1) morning, the government of Maharashtra has laid out the massive drive to increase the green cover across the state. As, part of the drive, about two crore tress were planted in the city. This tree plantation mission was commenced from morning 8:00am and it reached its target by 5:28pm, and ended up as going way beyond it. The event of plantation was assembled at 65,674 sites in Mumbai. It was inaugurated at Maharashtra Nature Park (MNP) with the plantation of around 3,800 trees on a 5-hectare plot along the banks of Mithi River. The people from various sector turned up in the large numbers to participate in this amazing drive. The event was launched in the presence of state Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister of Maharashtra state Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister of State for Environment Prakash Jawdekar, Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantwar and also Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray.
As per the plan, forest department was aimed to plant 1.5 crores tress, of the total target of two crore, but the officials said that they have reached beyond it and they successfully planted over three crore saplings. It is also expected that remaining 50 lakh trees to be planted in next three years by other departments of government along with members of the public and NGOs which will also help to exceed this target. Sudhir Mungantiwar, the forest Minister, said that, this was the just beginning of tree revolution in the states, and they have already set a target to plant total 25 crore tress across the Maharashtra State in 2017’s July 1st as well as 2019’s 1st July. He also stated that, they are not only focussing on planting the trees, but also on their survival and, hence they also sure that the percentage of survival of trees from the two crore planted will be extremely high & every tree which they have planted will be remarked on the GPS. They are not only looking at forestland, but they have also signed an MoU with the ministry of railway to carry out plantation on a vacant plot which owned by the railways.
Despite of continuous rains in the morning CM Fadnavis planted the tree of jarul, flower which is the state flower of Maharashtra state, while Governer Rao planted a sapling of mango. The minister of Environment, Jawdekar, called it as one of the biggest tree plantation drives and claimed that if every state across the nation takes up this initiatives, then within only 3 years the target of planting 100 crore trees can be easily achieved. Also CM, praised the efforts of forest departments and said that, he was very glad to become a part of this mission, which was not just one day event, but it was going to be a long term well thought out plan which ensures that the tree cover entire state.
